Rap and R&B-influenced electronic music label Pelican Fly may not have the worldwide name recognition of its peers, but it’s where dance artists turned in-demand pop producers like Lido and Cashmere Cat got their start.
The Brussels collective’s latest signee is Danish producer Vera, who first graced the label earlier this year with a single, “Trommer 1,” and who has made beats for Danish indie-pop band Liss and “Lean On” crossover star MØ. Today (September 23), he’s releasing his debut EP, Sketches for Trommer, which the label describes as a “musical statement” highlighting Vera’s “drummer background.”

We’re exclusively premiering one of the tracks off the EP, “Trommer 2,” a quirky bass tune that arrives early enough for Halloween house party hosts and DJs to add to their playlists. Dark and drum-heavy with eerie flute-work and warped, childlike vocal melodies, it offers the ominous yet playful feel of a poltergeist who fills your pillow with spiders.
Speaking with THUMP over email, Vera describes the song as “like a Creole voodoo group making a cover of a Neptunes production”—the vocal melody also reminds us of Missy Elliott’s “ra-ta-ta-ta” riff from the Timbaland-crafted “Work It.“
