A lot has been made of Sage Northcutt and his sudden rise to fame at the UFC. At just 19 years old and a perfect six-fight record in tow, there are plenty of upcoming fighters out there who want a piece of the action to gain the notoriety of putting a halt to Northcutt’s hype train.
Boosted by appearing on UFC President Dana White’s Looking for a Fight show pilot prior to his debut, Northcutt decimated veteran Francisco Trevino in just 57 seconds in a display of skill, aggression and brutality. The subsequent fanfare surrounding a UFC debut was unparalleled, boosted by the Internet age sharing gifs of his flip as much as they were his impressive performance.

UFC lightweight Kevin Lee was the most vocal in wanting the Northcutt match-up. After hearing “Super” Sage’s interview on MMAjunkie Radio, Lee called in afterwards to unleash a tirade of abuse towards Northcutt saying: “I just know he’s a rich, privileged white boy and as soon as he gets in there, gets hit and sees some adversity thrown in his face, I think he’s going to crumble.”
Lee’s bullish approach didn’t earn him the fight he wanted. At 4-1 in his UFC run, with his only loss coming to rising star Al Iaquinta, maybe the UFC thought it was unwise to throw Northcutt to Lee.
Instead, Cody Pfister got the nod to face off against Northcutt in his sophomore UFC outing. Lee wasn’t too impressed with this, having beat James Moontasri—the man behind Pfister’s last loss—and made his feelings known the MMA public.
