BASECAMP Rejuvenates the Romantic Intentions of AZEKEL’s ‘Mad About the Boy’

BASECAMP, the talented trio of Nashville musicians, have been quite productive since the release of their self-titled debut EP in 2013.

Since then, a string of successful singles and remixes have demonstrated a deeper dive into the anthemic, show-stopping bravado that often draws them comparisons to the sounds of SBTRKT and James Blake. Top amongst those efforts is their remix of The Kite String Triangle and Dustin Tebutt’s “Illuminate.” In it, a skittering rhythmic section teases out the layers of an impending melody, eventually evolving into a smoldering dancefloor ballad vaguely reminiscent of UK slow-burner, Lapalux.

But the group’s rhythmic mastery in “Illuminate” is only one facet of their progression throughout the last two years. Recent moves that have even earned them a spot on Skrillex’s OWSLA label.

On their newest remix of AZEKEL’s “Mad About the Boy,” their cohesive sound is bright and lively. Here, a slippery instrumental gets a bit of bounce, drawing out the best of the original’s romantic intentions.
