Jean Grae has been away for about a minute now, but yesterday, she dropped the Donkey Kong-inspired track “Kill Screen” and, in doing so, reminded everyone that good music from South Africa means more than just Die Antwoord.
Though she’s been away since 2008, the female wordsmith is as eager as ever, flowing at “540 words, 683 syllables, 52.54 syllables per sentence” with gaming websites, Ke$ha, and bath salts all dropped into the reference matrix.

“Dress mismatched like Confederate soldiers, told ya best to think fast this level is over, goin’ for the kill screen fist full of quarters…” Grae spits as I imagine her pushing handfuls of change through the arcade machine. I wonder if she ever completed the last lost world level. It took me five hours. :(
“Kill Screen” is taken from the forthcoming album, Gotham Down.
